The Doggie Days of Summer

Published by ibellamy at 3:25 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Summer is upon us and that means long lazy days and evenings.  It also means being extra-careful with your puppy or dog.  Summer means hot days, especially hot if you have a fur coat!  Here are some summer time tips for you and your dog:

During summer it is best to walk or exercise your best friend during the cooler parts of the day  such as early in the morning or in the later evening. Vigorous exercise is important for dogs, but the summer heat may make the usual routine more intense.

Consider trimming or shaving your dog’s coat during the summer.  Long-haired dogs can get extremely hot and uncomfortable in the summer, evn with air-conditioning.  Do not believe the old myth that long fur insulates a dog and keeps them cool. This is true for a few seconds, but after a minute or so, the coat begins to hold in body heat.

Walking or hiking in the summer is great exercise, but remember to treat your hiking companion the same as you. If you need to stop to take a drink, so does your dog. If you are feeling hot, your dog probably is also, so pour some water on their head and neck. (The best places to cool a dog down are on the neck, pads of the feet, and belly.)

Did you know that Smushed-faced dogs, such as bulldogs, should not exercise or be left out in hot weather?  These dogs often have small tracheas and long soft palates, which decrease their ability to cool themselves.  Check with your veterinarian about safe summer tips for these pets if you are uncertain.

Much of a dog’s ability to cool down is based on panting, so preventing panting can have disastrous consequences for your puppy or grown dog.  So do not use muzzles!

If your dog or puppy will be in the backyard, make sure they have a shady spot to rest in.  Dog houses really do not provide a shady cool space for dogs as the air will not circulate.  Dogs like shady trees, decks they can go under, or a patio type cover they can get shade under.  A small wading pool in the backyard makes a great way for dogs and pups to cool off.

Always ensure a fresh ample supply of water for your dog, no matter what the weather!
